Passage through airport security at Menorca airport should be simplified soon. Everyone who flies has experienced the nuisance of having to remove their footwear at some time as part of the security process. From early 2011 passengers will no longer be inconvenienced in this way. New detectors will be in place that can X-ray the footwear without it being removed. There will not be a one hundred per cent stop to the present practice of requiring shoes to be removed, for there will be cases where the security requirements may not be satisfied by the new equipment and footwear will need to be removed.

AENA's announcement follows an incident that occurred last week. A government Deputy, whilst passing through security in the plastic footwear provided after removing her shoes, fell and broke her elbow on the floor. Misericordia Sugrañes stated that she welcomed the move but wished it had come to Menorca earlier, as it has in other airports.

AENA stressed that this was an isolated case. In one year 2.5 million travellers pass through the terminal and this is the first accident of this type.
