The reorganisation of Ciutadella port will result in an extra 133 moorings being created, once the outer jetty is in operation and the larger vessels no longer have to enter the harbour.
The Balearic Port Authorities plan to install five pontoons in the area where the ferries now berth, which would provide moorings for 106 vessels, plus the harbour cruise boats and the lifeboat. A further 27 boats would be accommodated in the Moll de la Trona area, which will be adapted so that it is suitable for vessels in transit.
Alaior's new school named "Mestre Duran"
The Balearic Government has accepted "Mestre Duran" as the name for the new school in Alaior, named in honour of Joan Duran Pineda (1888-1926), a Catalan from Sabadell who came to the island in 1906 to teach in Alaior. He combined teaching with working as a correspondent for La Voz de Menorca and died from typhoid at the early age of 38.
Mixed results for the island's top two teams
It was a week of mixed fortunes for the women's volleyball and the men's basketball teams.
Valeriano Allés continued their unbeaten run in the Superliga, returning from Tenerife with a 3-0 win over opponents Figaros Peluqueros. They remain at the top of the vollleyball league table with 17 points, but next week face Universidad de Burgos, currently in second place with 13 points.
Also playing away, Menorca Bàsquet failed to overcome Gran Canaria 2014, the final score reading 88-77 in favour of the home team. Despite this, they remain 12th in the ACB league and will play fourth-place Unicaja on home ground next Sunday.
