In spite of the advent of electronic books people still enjoy the traditional way of reading a book made from paper. During the last two years the number of Menorcan residents using the island's libraries has jumped by 55%. Actual borrowing of books has also increased by 13%. However, it should be noted that use for wi-fi access to the internet has risen by a huge 98% in two years.

The governing body, Xarca de Biblioteques, administers the eight libraries found in Alaior, Ciutadella, Es Castell, Es Mercadal, Es Migjorn, Ferreries, Fornells and Sant Lluís. The library in Maó is governed by the State.

The borrowing of books is the most popular service used, followed by the borrowing of audiovisual materials and CDs. Menorca's libraries compare very favourably with the rest of Spain with greater content and higher rates of borrowing. Alaior's library has experienced the largest increase in borrowings. In Es Migjorn 40% of the townspeople have library cards.

Tourists form a significant fraction of people using the libraries. In response the number of foreign language books available has been increased.
