The proposal to lengthen the jetty currently under construction near Ciutadella, which it was decided last week would go ahead without the need for a report on its environmental impact, is not the only modification under consideration for the project.

The decision to add two more units to the jetty in order to reduce interior water disturbance will add 8.4 million euros to the original cost of the project which was awarded to the contractors for 60.12 million euros (and later increased by 19.6%).

In addition, Ports de les Illes Balears has decided to reinstate electricity and water supplies which had been deleted from the modified project and which will cost a further million euros.

Another modification to be introduced is the construction of a superstructure with a walkway that will separate the pedestrian and vehicle areas - at a cost of 1.2 million euros, according to information provided by Ports.

The third scheme to be added to the original project will make good use of the two extra units lengthening the jetty and will involve the installation of bollards and other structures that will enable the jetty to accommodate ships up to 250 metres in length, compared to the original limitation of 130 metres. This addition will cost a further 1.6 million euros.

With the addition of IVA, these three modifications will cost an extra 3,976,000 euros, to which must be added 800,000 euros for environmental observation and ensuring the safety of the workforce plus the two extra units, bringing the additional sum to 14,676,647.84 euros. The original cost of 60.12 million euros for the project has now risen to 76.6 million and that does not include the cost of constructing the ferry terminal or berths for the cruise ships.
