Police chases involving car and moped

A 34-year old Moroccan resident, H.E.O., who arrived in Ciutadella on Tuesday on board the Barcelona ferry 'Ramon Llull', was arrested after a police chase that ended near the Maó industrial estate. The man, who police suspected of carrying drugs, evaded a police checkpoint in Ciutadella and then failed to stop at another control near Alaior. The Guardia Civil gave chase and stopped the driver on the outskirts of Maó. During the operation 1.5 kilograms of cocaine were seized.

In another incident on the same day, police chased a moped that failed to stop on the Via Ronda when requested to do so as the rider was not wearing his helmet correctly. The chase led through the streets of Maó as far as Plaça Constitució where the rider abandoned the bike and attempted to flee on foot. The young Spaniard, F.C.T., was arrested by the Local Police and charged with stealing the bike and dangerous driving.

Airport to install metal detectors for shoes

Menorca Airport is to install devices that will detect metal in shoes. Similar units have already been fitted in other Spanish airports, including Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona and Palma, and will be installed in Menorca and 14 other airports this year or in the first quarter of 2011.

Headless Chickens take Menorca Sixes trophy

The Menorca Sixes competition, held at the Menorca Cricket Club's ground in Biniparrell on Sunday, attracted a good number of spectators, all of whom enjoyed the lighter side of cricket as six teams battled for the title.

The trophy was won by the Menorca Headless Chickens (sponsored by Mehoca) who defeated the Rainbow Spice Tigers (representing the restaurant of the same name) by 5 runs.

Club Vidalba who were running a tombola to raise funds for their cause (sports and leisure activities for the disabled) report a successful day but the total amount raised is not yet known.

With the arrival of summer, matches against visiting teams from the U.K. have drawn to a temporary close. In their place there will be two open cricket games per week on Wednesdays starting at 1030 hrs. and Saturdays at 1330 hrs., player registration thirty minutes earlier. These games are open to residents and visitors alike.
