Iscomar's "Nura Nova" became the first vessel to dock at the almost-completed exterior jetty at Ciutadella. The ferry carried out the exercise last week in order to assess any peculiarities prior to the official trials on 24th March when the companies that will be operating from the new structure will carry out manoeuvres.
The head of Iscomar, José Ignacio Seguí Chinchilla explained that they had asked the Port Authorities for permission for a trial run before the date set for the official trials and that this had been granted. Within the space of half an hour the "Nura Nova" docked twice, once on the port side and then on the starboard, without any problems. The trial was carried out in the presence of senior members of Ferrovial, the company responsible for constructing the jetty.
A few hours before the "Nura Nova" docked the Balearic Councillor for Public Works, Jaume Carbonero, had visited the jetty and announced the date for the general trials. Carbonero explained that the previous days' rain had delayed the asphalting of the docks but that he hoped that the time lost would be made up, although even in its present state the jetty could be used by vessels without problems.
Ready for Sant Joan
The access road should be finished on time, within two and a half months, and this project includes suppling water, electricity, drainage and fire-fighting services to the jetty. The ferry terminal should also be completed in time for the jetty to be fully operative for Sant Joan, or even before.
Referring to the reorganisation of the interior port once this is free of commercial traffic, Carbonera stated that the project was under way and that the first floating pontoons would be installed once the boats were using the new jetty. He also confirmed that Acciona had expressed an interest in operating from Ciutadella but had not given details as to how often. The Councillor ruled out the possibility of boats of more than 250 metres using the jetty, which had been built for "the boats that we want to come."
