Vicente Macián. "El Pater"

The atmosphere in the offices of the Diario "Menorca" has been very subdued since Saturday morning as staff mourned the loss of a valued and much loved colleague, Padre Macián. The priest had been a part of the editorial team for many years, contributing articles on musical and cultural events as well as looking back over the years through the newspaper's library.

The majority of readers who have spent time in hospital on the island, whether in the old Verge del Toro or in the Mateu Orfila, will have encountered Padre Macián who acted as hospital chaplain and never failed to visit every patient every day, whatever their nationality or religion. In spite of not speaking English, his personality was such that he managed to convey comfort and peace to all patients and their loved ones, whether believers or not, especially in terminal cases.

On a personal note, not only was "El Pater" of great practical help to me but also a bringer of much solace during my father's illness, his final days and after his death.

Born in Maó on 1st November 1927, Vicente Macián Cólera took holy orders at the age of 22 and served in many of the island's parishes, including the Santa Maria in Maó. He was also a teacher, giving private lessons in Greek, Latin and philosophy and teaching at local schools. On a visit to Rome in the year 2000, the priest received the blessing of Pope John Paul II. Last year he received an Editorial Menorca Award for being the leading figure in sociocultural activities on the island.

The quintessential priest, Father Macián will be much missed for his twinkling eyes and ever present smile, his words of good advice, his warmth, kindness and never-failing good humour. Rest in peace, Padre.
