Despite the Balearic Government having stated a few weeks ago that it would be impossible to complete the reorganisation of Ciutadella port by this summer, there not being enough time to erect the infrastructure once the large ferries had started operating from the exterior jetty, the Port Authority last week presented a project to the press which would allow the work to be done before the Sant Joan fiestas, at the end of June.

When the project is finished there will be 106 new berths in the interior of the port, in addition to the existing 159. Seven pontoons will be installed, six floating and one fixed, the latter for the 'golondrinas' (which run harbour trips), the lifeboat and boats 12 metres in length. The floating pontoons will accommodate boats of between 5 and 12 metres in length, including the smaller fishing boats.

According to the Port Authority, between 75% and 80% of the new berths will be used to reduce the waiting list for moorings in the port, while the remainder will be for boats in transit.

The project will cost around two million euros and take two months to complete, which would allow time for it to be finished before the Sant Joan fiestas. However, it all depends on when the scheduled ferries stop using the port and move to the exterior jetty. According to the President of the Port Authority and Councillor for Public Works, Jaume Carbonero, 99% of the work on the jetty has been completed and it should be ready by the beginning of May, allowing boats to berth there. Carbonero is meeting the shipping lines operating from Ciutadella today to start planning the move from one port to the other.

The new port will be operating before the provisional ferry terminal has been finished. During the interim period, probably a few weeks, a section of the new building will be prepared for passengers to use.

Carbonero explains that the ferry terminal is one of the unknown factors when calculating the date by which the jetty will be operational, the other is the access to the new port, the land for which is still occupied and has yet to be appropriated. The contract for the work has been awarded to the amalgamated companies Construcciones Llull Sastre and Antonio & Diego, for the sum of 1,375,000 euros.

The Councillor admitted that he was more concerned that the access was not finished than about the ferry terminal but was confident that it would all be completed on time; in fact he stated that although the Sant Joan Fiestas had been set as the deadline he was certain that it would all be finished earlier.
