Butane gas bottles the latest commodity to rise in price

Following announced increases in the cost of electricity and petrol (not to mention cigarettes) the price of a bottle of butane gas was increased from12.79 euros to 13.19 euros on 1st January, a rise of 3.13%. Electricity has increased by an average 9.8% and motorists are now paying an average of 1.24 euros per litre for 95 octane petrol (close to the all-time record and 13% more than at the beginning of 2010) and 1.16 euros for diesel (18% more than in January of last year).

On the Spanish mainland, motorists will find that tolls have increased on the autopistas by between 1.15% and 3.43% and train passengers will have to pay an extra 2.3% to 4.8% for their tickets.

The cost of postage stamps has also risen, national letters now costing between 3% and 11% more and international mail increasing by between 1.6% and 2.6%.

Two men arrested in Alaior for trafficking in cocaine

Last week the Guardia Civil arrested two men in Alaior on suspicion of trafficking in cocaine. The two Peruvians, Luís A.G.A., 33 years, and Tomás P.M., 30, were identified as the recipients of a package sent from Madrid containing 125 gms. cocaine, despite both the sender's and addressee's details being false.

The package first came under suspicion in Barajas Airport and was investigated by police on arrival in Maó where it was found to contain the drug.

Police are still investigating the case and are not ruling out the possibility of further arrests.

Partido Popular meeting in Maó for British citizens

The Partido Popular in Maó has organised a meeting for British citizens at which the PP candidate for Mayor of Maó, Agueda Reynes Calvache, will be present. This will be a chance for British residents to voice their views, discuss concerns and make suggestions for improvements to the town.

The meeting, with tea and coffee, will be held on Monday 10th January at 1700 hrs. in the Picadero Restaurant, on the road from Maó to Sant Lluís, and everyone is welcome.
