Within a period of twenty-four hours there were two stabbing incidents on the island.
The first occurred the Saturday before last in Es Pla, Ciutadella, when J.C.T., a 22-year old local resident, was stabbed in the chest in the early hours of the morning. He was taken to hospital and later released after treatment. A suspect, 29-year old R.J.T. from Barcelona, was arrested at the Canal Salat Medical Centre where he had gone to seek treatment for wounds on his hands.
After appearing before a magistrate R.J.T. was remanded in custody pending his trial. Meanwhile his father, who travelled to the island on hearing of his son's arrest, is attempting to prove his innocence with CCTV film taken by a security camera at a nearby outlet which he claims shows that his son was the victim and not the aggressor. According to the father, R.J.T. was set upon by eight people and there was no evidence whatsoever on film that he had used any type of weapon himself.
In the early hours of the following morning there was a second stabbing, this time in Alaior. On this occasion the victim was an American citizen who was stabbed during a fight that broke out during the fiesta celebrations. The victim was taken to the Mateu Orfila Hospital in Maó and released a few hours later after receiving treatment.
The Maó Guardia Civil have arrested a 25-year old man, J.G.O., in connection with the incident.
