Mother and son injured in traffic accident
A traffic accident on the Cala en Porter road on Saturday night left a mother and her son injured. The 8-year old boy, V. S. F., suffered mild bruising and was kept in hospital overnight for observation. The mother, 28-year old S. B. F., is still in hospital in a serious condition after suffering multiple fractures, some of which will require operations.


Menorcan monk dies in accident in Poconé
The Spanish Franciscan monk Joaquín Tebar died recently in a tragic road accident in Poconé, Brazil. The accident involved three vehicles, one of which was driven by the Spanish monk, and resulted in the deaths of two other people and left six people injured.
Known in the region as "Father Xim", Tebar acted as an intermediary between the non-governmental organisations Arca Menorca and Menorca Solidaria and the Poconé authorities to enable various social projects to be carried out in the region.


Joan Pons to perform in Alaior in April
The world-renowned baritone, Joan Pons, has accepted an invitation from the Cultural Centre in Alaior to perform in the town to mark the 20th anniversary of the Coral Mixta. Accompanied by his pianist daughter, Joana Pons, the Ciutadella-born opera singer will give a concert in the Santa Eulàlia Church on 13th April which will also feature tenor Carlos Llabrés and the choir.


Start of the 1 euro sale at Age Concern shop
Clothes, shoes and handbags are currently all for sale priced at just 1 euro in the shop run by Age Concern in Calle Cala Padera, Es Castell.
The shop is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 0930 to 1300 hrs.


Women's World Day of Prayer in Es Castell
The Santa Margarita Church in Calle Stuart, Es Castell will be holding the Women's World Day of Prayer on Friday 6th March at 1630 hrs. Christians of all denominations are welcome to attend.
This year the service, held annually on the first Friday in March, has been written by the women of Papua New Guinea with the theme "In Christ there are many members, yet one body". It will focus on indigenous women and children's concerns as their communities struggle to maintain their history and culture in an ever-changing world.


Suggested solution to Kraft's problem
A reader from Ciutadella has written to suggest a solution to the Kraft impasse. Barbara Lowe believes the company should start a line especially for the tourists - real Menorcan Mayonnaise, made in the city where it was invented and bearing the legend on the label.
She says that on several occasions she has been asked where to buy it by tourists who have heard the story and who are disappointed that they can only find Hellmans. Barbara believes that it should walk off the shelves like the gin, the shoes and the cheese.


Change of venue for Jars of Clay Church
The "Jars of Clay" Church, a Christ-centred, Bible-believing church, has recently transferred from Binisafuller to Es Mercadal. Services are now held at 1030 hrs. every Sunday in the Centre Sanitari, Calle Lepanto, 15, Es Mercadal. The services are held in English and everyone is welcome.


GOB excursion to Macarella and Macarelleta beaches
The next GOB excursion will be on Sunday 1st March and will be a walk to the beaches of Macarella and Macaelleta, including a visit to a farm producing ecological cold meats.
Participants should gather in the public car park at Macarella beach at 0930 hrs. for the walk which is due to finish at 1330 hrs.


Stocks fairs to be held in Alaior and Maó
The businessmen's association in Alaior has organised the town's first stocks fair, which will be held on 28th February and 1st March. Some 14 companies will be participating in the fair, offering items left over from the season for sale.
A 'tapas tasting' has been arranged by bars and restaurants in the town, Can Jaumot, Es Pouet, Escacs and Géminis, and the butcher Can Biel. These small tasters will be available at a very modest price between 1230 and 1430 hrs. and 1900-2100 hrs. on Saturday and from 1230 to 1430 hrs. on the Sunday.
The fair will be open on Saturday from 0930 to 1430 hrs. and 1630 to 2100 hrs. and on Sunday from 0930 to 1500 hrs.
The following week, 6th to 8th March, the Exhibition Centre on the Maó industrial estate will host another Stocks Fair.
