I volunteered to assist with restoration of the RN Hospital – Isla del Rey – after a presentation by General Luis Alejandre Sintes at the Rotary club of Menorca in 2004.
My first visit as a "friend of the hospital" took place in September 2004. My first impression was of a challenging and daunting task; as all buildings had disappeared amongst trees and bushes and indeed some trees were growing within buildings.
The group of volunteers possessed an amazing spirit of camaraderie and an attitude of "anything can be achieved". It was this spirit that appealed to me as a retired army officer; that the challenge could be grasped and overcome. That spirit alive today after 11 years of hard, rewarding and enjoyable work, this cements the friends of the hospital.
Once all the trees and foliage had been cleared natural groups emerged with their particular interests many from their careers:
Pharmacists – the amazing gardens
Medical Rooms – ever expanding as new items are donated
Italian Rooms – covered previously
In my case, I was asked to restore the RN Chapel with other volunteers which eventually came to fruition in June 2011, to coincide with the many 300th celebrations.
The celebrations in 2011 just 7 years from the start of this project epitomised the amazing effort and dedication of some 50 volunteers of different nations who came together to save this Georgian Hospital.
I feel proud and privileged to be one of these volunteers, long may continue in the spirit of and the tenacity he showed.

Capilla Anglicana. Me ofrecí para ayudar con la restauración del RN Hospital – Isla del Rey - después de una presentación realizada por el general Luis Alejandre Sintes en el Rotary Club de Menorca en 2004.
Mi primera visita como "amigo del hospital", tuvo lugar en septiembre de 2004. Mi primera impresión fue que se realizaba una tarea difícil y desalentadora: todos los edificios habían desaparecido entre los árboles y arbustos y de hecho algunos árboles estaban creciendo dentro de los edificios.
El grupo de voluntarios poseía un increíble espíritu de camaradería y una actitud de "todo se puede lograr". Fue este espíritu que me atrajo a esa causa; como oficial retirado del ejército, que el desafío podría ser comprendido y superado. Ese espíritu está vivo aún hoy, después de 11 años de duro trabajo, gratificante y agradable, esto consolida los amigos del hospital.
Una vez que toda la vegetación y los árboles se habían limpiado, grupos naturales surgieron con sus intereses particulares fuera de sus carreras:
Los farmacéuticos - los increíbles jardines (plantas medicinales).
Salas médicas - siempre en expansión con los nuevos materiales que se reciben como donación.
Sala italiana - "Roma", totalmente consolidada.
En mi caso, se me pidió restaurar la Capilla Anglicana con otros voluntarios que con el tiempo llegó a buen puerto en junio de 2011 - coincidiendo con la celebración del 300 aniversario.
La celebración en 2011, sólo 7 años después del inicio de este proyecto, demuestra el esfuerzo increíble y la dedicación de unos 50 voluntarios de diferentes nacionalidades, los cuales se unieron para salvar este hospital.
Me siento orgulloso y privilegiado de ser uno de estos voluntarios, muchos de ellos, seguimos en el espíritu de Pedro Coca y su tenacidad.
