An estimated 9.7 million euros will be needed to cover the cost of converting the old Verge del Toro Hospital into a public health centre, the use of which will be shared between the Departments of Health and Social Affairs in the Balearic Government and Island Council. The future centre will probably be managed by a public consortium which will allow participation by private entities.

The plan for the former Maó hospital, which was in use until April 2007 when the Mateu Orfila Hospital opened, is to utilise 80.5% of the building's 6,119 sq.m., with 36.17% being used by the Department of Health, 6.28% by Social Affairs, 27.18% by the Island Council and its dependent consortiums and 30.38% reserved as common area which could house new services in the future.

The Balearic Councillor for Health, Vicenç Thomàs, has stated that plans for the old hospital will be developed through social participation and that a design competition will be held to decide on the architecural style to be used in the conversion. It is estimated that it will be a year before the definitive project is to hand and work can begin.

Finance for the project will be shared by the different authorities, in proportion to the amount of space allocated to them in the new building.
