The Sala Multifuncional in Es Mercadal hosted a presentation with a difference on Saturday, the guests of honour being various models of electric car. The day was intended to bring the "green" cars to the public's attention, making them aware of the sustainable vehicle's slow but relentless incursion into everyday life.

Hailed as the solution to the problem of pollution caused by combustion engines, the electric car is clean and emission-free. A top speed of 120 kilometres makes the vehicle suitable for motorway journeys, as well as trips around town. The car has a range of 203 kilometres and recharging its battery (from a 16 amp supply) costs about 2 euros, making it cheaper to run than the conventional fossil fuel motor. It is estimated that the saving on fuel for a car that does 15,000 to 20,000 kilometres per year will be in the range of 1,200 to 1,600 euros per annum.

The company exhibiting models at the presentation, Hidronew XXII, a subsidiary of the Jofemar Group, specialises in converting conventional cars to run on electricity. Hidronew has also developed a hydrogen battery system which could be used in the future once enough hydro generators have been installed for recharging; these would have a range of around 500 kms.

During the presentation the President of the Island Council, Marc Pons, announced that a plan is being drawn up to introduce the electric vehicle. The document will also set the guidelines for installing recharging points in public areas on the island, as well as in tourist resorts.

The Mayor of Mercadal, Francesc Ametller, explained some of the measures the Council is considering to encourage the switch to electric transport, including a possible reduction in the road tax, bonuses for using renewable energy, or exemption for paying in the 'blue' parking areas.
